NEW YORK — Bernie Sanders told a late-night TV audience Tuesday that Donald Trump's antics are cut from an old political cloth — and that they will fail.
"Throughout history we've had the demagogues trying to divert attention away from the real issues," Sanders said during an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. "What somebody like Trump is trying to do is to divide us up. A few months ago we're supposed to hate Mexicans, he thinks they're all criminals and rapists. Now we're supposed to hate Muslims."
"That kind of crap is not going to work in the United States of America," he went on.
Sanders comments came a day after Trump introduced a proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States. As he has many times on the campaign trail, Sanders appealed to voters to look past what he calls rhetoric designed to divide and distract from his core issues of economic security.
"I think what the American people understand is given the problems that we face, we've got to stand together and come together and stop this scapegoating of one group or another," Sanders said.
Sanders' focus is on Hillary Clinton, the leader in the Democratic presidential polls. But he said that a general election matchup Trump would be an experience to remember.
"I look forward to beating Donald Trump," Sanders said. "I would enjoy that race very much."
